December 2008 Dear Friends of Public Architecture: This abbreviated version of our monthly newsletter is principally to announce our year-end appeal, now underway. Please consider a donation to support our work. Click here to read the appeal and make a donation online. One of our newest donors is manufacturing leader Herman Miller. Public Architecture is honored to be featured along with Architecture for Humanity in the Herman Miller holiday card, which promotes the power of design to improve lives. Finally, we want to draw your attention to a new Public Architecture staff position for which we are seeking applicants as well as the upcoming Rudy Bruner Award deadline. Thank you for your past and continued support. John Peterson Founder & President Contents: 1. 11 Firms, 11 Nonprofits Join The 1% Program in November 2. Click here for a complete list of these new participants. Included in this month's nonprofit registrants is the Keep on Pushing Foundation, which aims to "nourish the minds, bodies, and spirits of K-12 students in underprivileged areas, worldwide using entrepreneurial as well as charitable tools." The Keep on Pushing Foundation has turned to The 1% program to find an architect for its "Drews Avenue Primary School Bakery Company," a prototype of a standalone kitchen and food preparation area to be located in an elementary school in Jamaica. Stephen Samuels, President of the Keep on Pushing Foundation, looks forward to a collaboration that "fulfills our Foundation mission to get these kids truly empowered to succeed in life." Firm and nonprofit registrations consistently open new opportunities for meaningful pro bono engagement for design professionals, and access to donated or discounted design services for nonprofits. Public Architecture encourages all members of The 1% to frequently visit TheOnePercent.org website in order to stay abreast of new opportunities. Visit www.theonepercent.org for more information. 2. Public Architecture Hiring New Project Associate Public Architecture is now seeking candidates for the new position of Project Associate. Joining our fulltime staff of four, the Project Associate will assist with a range of Public Architecture projects, currently including work on major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), and United Way of the Bay Area. The Project Associate will also assist with the refinement of The 1% program matching system, which connects nonprofits seeking design assistance with firms willing to give of their time on a pro bono basis. Candidates with a degree in architecture or urban design as well as 2-4 years of experience are invited to submit a letter of intent, resume, and work samples by email. The review process is ongoing, and the application processes will remain open until the position is filled. Click here to download a PDF of the Project Association position description, also available through the Public Architecture website. 3.
