January 2007

Dear Friends of Public Architecture:

We would like to start 2007 with a very special thank you to the many people, firms, and organizations that have either responded to our 2006 Year-end Appeal or indicated to us that they plan to do so. Support for Public Architecture continues to come in many forms and from many corners. With your continued support, we're poised to make 2007 a breakthrough year.

You might be surprised to hear what we have in store. Think big. And stay tuned.

2. 10 for 1 Sponsorship Opportunity

Our new 10 for 1 program is an effort to support the 1% Solution and celebrate the pro bono and public interest design pursuits of leading firms. The program represents a $10,000 annual donation to Public Architecture to support the 1% Solution. An official announcement about the program and our charter group of firms is expected later this month.

Perkins + Will (Chicago), McCall Design Group (San Francisco), Elness Swenson Graham (Minneapolis), HKS (Dallas), HOK (St. Louis, MO), and PWA (Columbia, MO) have already signed on as "10 for 1" sponsors. Your firm can demonstrate its commitment to pro bono service and good design for all people by becoming a "10 for 1" sponsor today.

4. Pro Bono News

The Washington Architectural Foundation (WAF) has announced its 2006 Pro Bono Publico Awards, which recognize architects and related design and construction professionals who provide professional services to nonprofit or charitable organizations at a reduced cost or no cost. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only award program specifically celebrating pro bono design. The three 2006 honorees include: The Catholic University Design Collaborative for the Stuart Hobson Middle School Library; District of Columbia Building Industry Association for the renovation of Virginia Avenue Park; and the Landscape Architecture Bureau for the John Wiebenson Memorial Playground. Click here for a list of recent honorees.

The Boston Society of Architects/AIA has announced the establishment of a Pro Bono Committee, which will convene for the first time later this month. Conceived by architect Steven Paradis, the BSA committee hopes to "determine how to move toward the creation of an intentional corporate strategy that supplements the work of groups such as the CDRC-Boston and Public Architecture." The initial meeting of the Pro Bono Committee is January 22. For more information or to RSVP, call 617-951-1433 x221 or email bsa@architects.org. Comments and suggestions can be directed to Steven Paradis at sjp@archatelier.us.

5. Skilled Volunteers Sought for Museum Exhibition

Over the course of the past month, we have updated the profiles for each of Public Architecture's five design projects. Chief among them is our Day Labor Station, which has been updated with new renderings generated by Public Architecture as well as day laborer portraits by photographer Elena Dorfman. With the support of contractor Ryan Associates, green consultant Simon & Associates, and many others, we plan to build the first prototype of our Day Labor Station for deployment later this year.

Starting this spring, a full-scale section of the prototype will be exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. The exhibit, titled "Design for the Other 90%," will open in early May and run through September 2007.

Accordingly, Public Architecture is seeking volunteer services of an architecture graduate with 1 to 5 years of experience, an experienced 3D renderer, and a skilled physical model-maker to help with the production of materials for the exhibition and corresponding efforts. This is an incredible opportunity to be involved in an exhibition at a high-profile museum as well as with a project that could have a profound social impact. The volunteers would work closely with Public Architecture staff to complete the materials over the course of the next month.
