From its inception in 2000, the dual mission of the Structures for Inclusion (SFI) conference has consistently been 1) to showcase design efforts that reach out to and serve a diverse clientele, and 2) to provide information on alternative career paths available to students and young designers.  Past hosts have included Princeton University (2000), Pennsylvania State University (2002), the University of Virginia (2003), the Community Housing Resource Center of Atlanta (2004), and the City College of New York (2005). Attendance has grown from 75 participants in 2000 to a record 300 participants in 2006.

A diverse roster of speakers addressed the conference theme through one of the following five panels: Designers’ Roles in Disaster Preparedness & Relief, Approaches to Single-Family Housing, Public Interest Design by Mainstream Firms, Activist Architecture & Design, and Starting & Maintaining an Inclusive Practice.
