Dear Friend of Public Architecture:

Whether the aftermath of a catastrophic storm, inadequate spaces for cultural and educational institutions, or lack of truly affordable housing, we live in a time when design needs to match the power of other social, economic, and political forces shaping our environment. Public Architecture is mobilizing the design community to make this happen.  I hope you will make a gift to support this important work.

This past year, we:
  • Recruited more than 100 architecture and design firms from all over the country to join our 1% Solution program, pledging over 50,000 hours and an estimated $5,000,000 in pro bono architectural services to communities in need;
  • Shared the story of ScrapHouse--built entirely of salvaged materials--through a documentary film on the National Geographic Channel, touching people around the world by revealing new possibilities of green building, recycling, and reuse;
  • Collaborated on a ‘how to’ manual for homeowners to convert their garages into Accessory Dwelling Units, addressing the widespread need for affordable, multigenerational, and sustainable housing in communities across the country;
  • Spoke at 18 architecture and design schools across the country and co-hosted the sixth annual and largest-ever Structures for Inclusion conference, raising awareness of public interest architecture among the next generation of designers.
In the coming year, we will:
  • Expand our 1% Solution program, matching nonprofit organizations in need of assistance with design firms willing to donate their time;
  • Exhibit our Day Labor Station at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, in preparation for permanent use at an actual day laborer site, bringing dignity through design to a social issue affecting many cities; and
  • Break ground on two projects: a 25,000-sq.ft. green community center in Seattle being designed in collaboration with the firm of Miller|Hull as well as our long-awaited open space sidewalk plaza in San Francisco’s South of Market Area.
For all this and much more, your contribution can truly make a difference. Please be as generous as you can, because every dollar counts as we work to improve the places we live.

Sincerely,

John Peterson
