Dear Friend of Public Architecture:

Over the past year, more than 300 nonprofits--community centers, health clinics, libraries, schools, social service agencies--dared to dream how pro bono design could advance their mission by utilizing The 1% program of Public Architecture. Meanwhile, even in the worst economic environment in decades, more than 650 architecture and design firms pledged to donate at least one percent of their time to pro bono service. Collectively, our firms have pledged an estimated $25 million in services in 2009 alone.

With the support of people like you--people who believe in the power of design to change lives--Public Architecture connects deserving pro bono clients with talented designers eager to give of their time. Public Architecture leverages $25 in pro bono services for every $1 you donate. These services improve the places in which we live, learn, work, and play--particularly in under-resourced communities, where design can make a world of difference. And so can you.

This coming year, we will publish our first major book showcasing 50 exemplary pro bono projects undertaken by leading architecture firms and nonprofits across the country. We will launch a web-based primer on material reuse after two years of research funded by the U.S. Green Building Council. We will evolve our partnership with the AmeriCorps*VISTA service program to create jobs, resources, and opportunities, while expanding our volunteer and internship programs to embrace the next generation of architects. We will grow our partnerships with major manufacturers and place their best products in pro bono projects across the country. We will recruit more firms and connect them with more nonprofits in need of design assistance. And we will do all this out of the conviction that good design changes lives.

With your support, Public Architecture, The 1% firms and nonprofits, and our other partners across the country are poised to make more of a difference than ever before.
