Volunteer Opportunities

Public Architecture's current volunteer openings are listed below. In addition, the organization maintains a list of those interested in volunteering to contact as needs arise. Interested parties should email info@publicarchitecture.org expressing interest and include a resume and, where appropriate, any available work samples. Upon receipt of said materials, candidates will be asked to fill out a brief online questionnaire.

The 1% Program Assistant
Conduct outreach to The 1% program firm and nonprofit participants. This position involves the culling together of data about The 1% participants based on phone and email conversations. Assist with The 1% annual surveys, the nonprofit survey launch and concluding the firm survey already underway.
Skills Desired: Strong research skills required as well as verbal and written communication skills. Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Excel & Word skills necessary, and Salesforce experience a plus.
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week, minimum four-month commitment.
Location: Public Architecture office

Social Media and Blog Assistant
Post regular updates to Public Architecture’s social media sites and website, as well as conduct research and generate content for our blog.
Skills Desired: Knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, HootSuite and LinkedIn. Solid writing skills.
Time Commitment: 3 hours per week, two-month minimum commitment
Location: Public Architecture office

Filled positions:

Data Entry Assistant
Gain experience with Salesforce by updating Public Architecture’s contact database through data entry and research.
Skills Desired: Detail-oriented, has experience with data entry and has held responsibility for administrative duties in the past, previous experience with Salesforce is a plus.
Time Commitment: Two-four hours per week; two-month minimum commitment.
Location: Public Architecture office.

Design for Reuse Project Bank Volunteer
The Design for Reuse Project Bank Volunteer will research material reuse projects and develop written content for the “Project Bank” section of the Design for Reuse Knowledge Exchange, a website which provides knowledge and resources to promote and facilitate building material reuse. The ”Project Bank” is a growing library of inspiring material reuse projects from around the world. It is intended to highlight best-practices which successfully addressed the challenges and showcase the potential of reuse. As a volunteer, you will be responsible for identifying and researching new material reuse projects as well as writing and posting ~200 word project write-ups to the “Project Bank” twice per month. Other responsibilities will include contacting architects or photographers to secure image permissions for projects and work in Adobe In Design.
Skills Desired: Strong research skills, stong verbal and written communication skills, proficiency in Adobe In-Design.
Time Commitment: 4-5 hours per week, minimum two-month commitment.
Location: Public Architecture office or remote.

Filmmaking Assistant
Shoot and edit new video series on the Lights on Market initiative. Other projects forthcoming.
Skills Desired: Knowledge of FinalCut Pro, professional or academic experience in filmmaking.
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week, two-month minimum commitment
Location: Public Architecture office or remote location

Animation Assistant
Create animations to be used on the Public Architecture website and public presentations.
Skills Desired: Knowledge of Flash, Quicktime, After Effects or other animation program.
Time Commitment: Hours per week are dependent of each project.
Location: Public Architecture office preferred, remote location may be considered.

Publication Assistant
Assist in the production of digital-reader compatible and print versions of Public Architecture’s online publication, the Design for Reuse Primer.
Time Commitment: Roughly 15 hours in January or February of 2011.
Location: Public Architecture office or remote location

Website & Newsletter Assistant
Assist in coding for monthly newsletters, and website html coding.
Skills Desired: Basic HTML knowledge.
Time Commitment: 5 hours per month at end of the month, three-month minimum commitment
Location: Public Architecture office or remote location.

Office & Database Assistant Assist in general office work and contacts database maintenance.
Skills Desired: Attention to detail, intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Experience with Salesforce or previous administrative experience a major plus.
Time Commitment: 3 hours per week, three-week minimum commitment
Location: Public Architecture office.

Social Media & Web Development Assistant
Assist in devising social media strategy for Public Architecture and re-designing our main site.
Skills Desired: Basic HTML knowledge and a pulpable enthusiasm for social media.
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week, two-month minimum commitment
Location: Public Architecture office or remote location.

Interview & Transcription Assistants
Participate in and transcribe project case study interviews for marketing of forthcoming book on pro bono design, to be published by Metropolis Books / Distributed Art Publishers.
Skills Desired: Previous experience with transcription a plus, fast typing skills and strong verbal and written communication.
Time Commitment: 4+ hours per week, two month commitment, beginning mid-February.
Location: Public Architecture office or remote location.

Material Reuse Research Assistant
Conduct research for the Design for Reuse Primer, a project supported by the U.S. Green Building Council. Assist in the development of case studies and resources focused on the use of salvaged materials in new construction.
Skills Desired: Strong research and written communication skills.
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week, minimum two-month commitment
Location: Public Architecture office.
